Building Community Trust

The Diagnostic Center connects law enforcement at the state, city and tribal level with customized trainings to help them improve public safety by building community trust in the justice system. Police Departments experiencing success in reducing crime attribute enhanced police-community relations as an important factor. The Diagnostic Center supports law enforcement by providing Procedural Justice training for law enforcement based on curricula developed by the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice. This training uses evidence-based policing to increase public trust of law enforcement, ensure officer and community safety and enhance crime-fighting capabilities. Additional Diagnostic Center training and technical assistance activities focus on de-escalation, use of force, implicit bias, reconciliation, community policing, officer safety and wellness, early intervention systems and community partnerships.

Building and maintaining community trust is the key to successful law enforcement. Community involvement can enhance cooperation and information-sharing in fighting crime and improves police compliance. The Diagnostic Center works hand-in-hand with community representatives to support building trust with the justice system based on each community’s unique set of needs. This may be accomplished through comprehensive technical assistance in collaboration with justice system actors, as well as by facilitating delivery of training to increase their understanding, build their capacity and broaden their experience with implementing the concepts of procedural justice.
