Gary, IN Progresses with the National Initiative

Gary, IN leadership is hopeful that the National Initiative for Building Community Trust and Justice (National Initiative) will assist in improving community-police relations through its focus on enhancing procedural justice, addressing implicit bias and facilitating racial reconciliation. Police Chief Larry McKinley noted that the city of Gary has already been working with the Department of Justice (DOJ) Office of Justice Programs (OJP) Diagnostic Center and stated that the National Initiative has “been a great opportunity for the police department to expand and become more in touch with the community – and for the community to be more in touch with the police.” Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson looks forward to reaping the benefits that the program offers, stating “I believe this really does position us to take an introspective look – to do that with the assistance of experts. It also allows us to play or incorporate some cutting edge strategies that will allow us to engage better in the community.”
