Social Media as a #LawEnforcement Tool: The Fundamentals
On July 18, 2017, the OJP Diagnostic Center hosted a webinar in collaboration with Lauri Stevens, founder of LAwS Communications, and Laura McElroy, Principal Consultant at McElroy Media Group. The hour-long webinar titled “Social Media as a #LawEnforcement Tool: The Fundamentals” provided an overview of the core concepts necessary for establishing a positive social media presence.
Law Enforcement agencies must build positive relationships with community stakeholders to successfully fight crime. In today’s digital landscape, social media allows officers to connect with citizens in real-time and effectively develop these relationships.
The webinar’s first presenter, Lauri Stevens, introduced processes, tools and recommended policies for executing a successful department wide social media strategy. She offered examples of digital tools, campaigns and initiatives implemented by agencies as well as challenges and lessons learned.
The second presenter, Laura McElroy, discussed how she collaborated with the Diagnostic Center to support the Minneapolis (MN) Police Department’s (MPD) community engagement efforts through the implementation of a social media strategy. Using the MPD as a case study, Ms. McElroy offered insights and examples of how the department is ensuring its voice is part of the larger story.
