Durham (NC) City Council Votes to Accept Office of Justice Programs Diagnostic Center Training and Technical Assistance

In 2014, Durham (NC) Bill Bell reached out to the Office of Justice Programs Diagnostic Center following a spike in homicides and strained police-community relations. Last month, the Diagnostic Center presented its analysis of Durham’s criminal justice strengths, challenges and areas for improvement to members of the city council, police department and community. The Diagnostic Center’s recommendations for improvement include developing a communications strategy, enhancing community collaboration and revitalization as well as participating in peer exchanges with other police agencies that have proven approaches to addressing violent crime. Included in the Diagnostic Center’s presentation was an offer to assist the city with developing and implementing the recommended evidence-based training and technical assistance programs. On Thursday, May 21, the City Council voted to accept this offer. For more information on the city council vote and how the Diagnostic Center will assist Durham, click here.
